American Airlines is having a promotion through September 30, 2012 where one receives up to 25% bonus miles when sharing miles. When you share miles with someone, you can choose to receive the bonus miles yourself or allow the recipient to receive them. Of course, when transferring miles to someone else's account, the transfer is not free. I would only suggest making this transfer if you need it because you are very close to an award and need to book quickly. See below for the transfer costs.

1,000 - 5,000 miles $50
6,000 - 10,000 miles $100
11,000 - 15,000 miles $150
16,000 - 20,000 miles $200
21,000 - 25,000 miles $250
